General Information Regarding Your Medication

  • It is important to take your medication daily, as prescribed. Try to take medication at the same time each day. This helps to keep from forgetting. It is also useful to take medication at the same time you already do something (brushing teeth, morning coffee etc.)
  • If you forget to take your pills in the morning, they may be taken later in the day. Don’t double your dose the next day if you completely forget.
  • Antidepressants are not addictive, habit-forming or mind altering. However, some medications may give side effects if you suddenly stop taking them.
  • You are given enough medication or refills to last until your next appointment. If you are out of refills or running out of pills, this is a reminder that it is time for your next appointment! Please call for a follow-up appointment!
  • Medications take time to work. At least 2 weeks but as long as 5 or 6 weeks to achieve a response.
  • If side effects occur, they tend to become apparent in the first few weeks. Side effects usually resolve with time. Common side effects may include anxiety, nausea, sedation or insomnia. If you have questions or concerns about possible side effects, don’t hesitate to call.
  • Sexual dysfunction may occur as a side effect with some medications. This may include decreased desire or problems with performance. Be sure to mention these during your office visit because they are often treatable.
  • Be sure to inform me if you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant.
  • Bring a list of questions to your appointment!
